Underlying this vision is the recognition that there is no other city in the world that draws as much attention to itself, from a religious and interreligious perspective, as Jerusalem. That the conflict in the Holy Land should loom so large in the world's mind, in a way that is disproportionate in comparison with many other international conflicts, is largely a consequence of the religious significance of Jerusalem and of the Holy Land. The world exhibits a deep desire to bring peace to Jerusalem and its Land. The place that Jerusalem captures in the imagination of the world - both East and West - thus provides it with huge symbolic charge. A sign of HOPE coming from Jerusalem has special significance, and is, as such, more potent than that same sign generated from any other site. At the same time, any step, however small, towards the dawning of peace in the Holy City is itself welcome and much needed. The HOPE Project seeks to achieve both of these goals in relation to Jerusalem, as it stands in relation to the rest of the world.
There is not a single institution in all of Jerusalem in which its religions share and come together. There is no interreligious center that is frequented by members of the three religions and there is absolutely no sense of the possibility of sharing a site or a place of worship, as a means of seeking to express and deepen the quest for peace and harmony between Jerusalem's religions. Were such a center to be created, it would provide a powerful symbol of the potential that Jerusalem has to be a city of meeting, rather than only of tension. It would inspire people outside Jerusalem, worldwide, to both support the collaborative spiritual vision of Jerusalem and to seek to emulate it and to extend it to their various localities. Thus, a Jerusalem-based project is actually quite international in its ultimate vision.
This grandiose vision integrates the different levels of expertise and accomplishment that Elijah has achieved while taking them a significant step forward. The HOPE Center also provides a home for the various organs created by the Elijah Interfaith Institute. It suggests a clear relation of center and periphery, allowing Jerusalem to function as a symbolic center for a message of interreligious growth and understanding worldwide. |
