Response to Growing Series of Vandalism and Destruction

A post from a member of the Elijah Academy, expressing Elijah’s response to the vandalism committed in the name of religion:

May 15, 2014

Dear,

I was shocked to hear on this morning’s radio news (5:00) that Notre Dame was desecrated with graffiti last night. This kind of hate crime – another in an unfortunately growing series of anti-Christian and anti-Arab/Muslim vandalism and destruction – is not just corrosive in terms of human relations, it is in every sense a hillul ha-shem, a desecration of the divine name and of every legitimate religious value. This hateful behavior violates everything we are taught by the Torah, “whose ways are ways of pleasantness, and all of whose paths are peace” (Proverbs 3:17).

As a Jew, Israeli and Zionist, I am ashamed by such terrible behavior, and even more, I am both ashamed and alarmed by the silence of much of the rabbinic leadership, and by my government’s failure to take meaningful and effective action to stop it.

Shalom,

Raphi
